Take Back Your Sleep!

I never realized what a treat sleeping through the night was until I had children. I envied the mothers who swore that their babies slept through the night within one or two weeks of life. Even within one or two months began to fill me with longing. And then, one or two YEARS starting sounding good.

It was almost as if overnight I’d turned into a sleep-deprived, raving lunatic.

And, then, the extraordinary happened. My children finally started sleeping through the night and my relationship with my pillow- and everyone living around me – took a dramatic turn for the better. I blissfully enjoyed uninterrupted nights of sleep, quickly forgetting those bad nights. I was finally able to accomplish getting through a full day with energy to spare; by the time 6 PM rolled around I could actually cook – and eat – dinner without longing to lie down.

Until…

Menopause. Actually, peri-menopause, those years leading up to the final event. Yes, my children were now sleeping not only through the night; come to think of it, they were sleeping through some days, too, as typical teenagers will often do. But I wasn’t.

There it was – the return of that old, familiar longing-for-sleep. Losing sleep. Looking for sleep in all the wrong places, like when stopped at a red light or when I sat in a dentist’s chair and was finally able to put my head down.

A recent survey done by Manhattan Research that polled 900 women who have experienced sleep problems during menopause found that they had not talked to their healthcare practitioner about their symptoms of insomnia. And 76 percent of the women polled said that their insomnia during this time had a moderate-to-significant impact on their overall quality of life. THAT part I remember: the daytime drowsiness, the unending fatigue, the irritability and difficulty concentrating on anything more than the wish to get a decent night’s sleep.

Let’s not even start about how sleep deprivation can wreak havoc on your romantic relationships – nearly 34 percent of the women polled admitted to intimacy with their husband or partner suffering. (I have a feeling it is much more, but they’re just too tired to think about it or to care.)

In the past, I’ve written about ways to get a good night’s sleep in posts like The Truth About Sleep As We Age, The Health Dangers of Too Little Sleep, and why naps are such a common – and important – habit.

And frankly, I’m tired (pun intended) about writing about sleep right now. So, I give you this: www.TakeBackYourSleep.com. It’s a wonderful resource for menopausal women – whether that be pre, during, or post-menopause – who struggle with sleeping.

Why not take a look and learn what you can about various treatment options, tips for sleeping, and the connection of sleeplessness to your hormones.

What you learn may be enough to send you back to lala land and make you a very happy – and rested - person once again.

HOW TO PREVENT CHILDHOOD OBESITY

Childhood obesity is a growing problem in today’s society. Every year, the percentage of obesity rises, especially for children. How do we overcome the obesity? Below are six effective ways to make a positive impact on this serious dilemma. 1. START THEM OFF WITH GOOD EATING HABITS: Cookies and candy are commonly enjoyed more by children than ...
f they clean their room without being asked or get good grades, don’t promise to take them out for ice cream or for a hamburger of their choice. Take them on a trip to the zoo instead. Positive reinforcement such as “Great job, kiddo!” or “Nice work, son!” always works too. Chances are, if they’re rewarded with a special treat, they’re going to continue good deeds and you’ll make frequent trips to the ice cream parlor.

Studies show that close to 1 in 3 American children are considered to be overweight or obese. With these 6 preventions, hopefully the necessary steps in decreasing the numbers of overweight or obese children are taken. Obesity can lead to other serious health problems that include but not limited to, diabetes, high blood pressure and even death.

With the holidays coming up, this is an even more pressing issue. Children are allowed to gorge themselves all day! Do you think this could lead to obesity, or should we consider it as just one day a year?

New Delhi
, July 27 (ANI):Controversial Bollywood actress and TV personality Rakhi Sawant expressed her willingness to marry Yoga guru Baba Ramdev. While addressing mediapersons on the sidelines of a promotional event in New Delhi, Sawant spoke of how she also admired Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi. The Drama queen admitted that Ramdev's yoga sessions have made an impact on her life.

Known to be in limelight for all wrong reasons and numerous controversial acts, she has always been in the news for her raunchy videos to her controversial stay on 'Bigg Boss', or walking out of 'Nach Baliye' finale in a huff and leaving Salman Khan high and dry.

If this was not enough to satiate her hunger for publicity, she hit headlines for her infamous romance with commoner Abhishek Awasthi, followed by a kissing episode with singer Mika. Her 'Rakhi Ka Swayamvar' on NDTV Imagine opened a pandora's box that not only entertained people but also had the gossip columns buzzing for months.

All this helped her in paving way to one of Bollywood's most sophisticated filmmakers Karan Johar's chat show 'Koffee With Karan'.

For the last one year Rakhi has been constantly courting controversy for her non-stop bloopers and blunders on the reality show 'Raki Ka Insaaf'. If one tries to list her bunglings on the small screen, it would be difficult to pen all as she has been in the limelight for all the wrong reasons for more than five years. No wonder she is crowned the controversy queen.

'Viagra' for women to hit the shelves soon

Washington, May 24 (ANI): Good news for women who want to perk up the action in their bedroom-the Food and Drug Administration committee is thinking of endorsing the first pill designed to do for women what Viagra does for men-boost their sex lives.
A German pharmaceutical giant wants to sell a drug with the decidedly unsexy name "flibanserin," which has shown prowess for sparking a woman's sexual desire by fiddling with her brain chemicals.
The FDA's Reproductive Health Drugs Advisory Committee will meet on June 18 to consider the request.
But the prospect of the drug's approval has already triggered debate over whether the medication, like others in the pipeline, represents a long-sought step toward equity for women's health or the latest example of the pharmaceutical industry fabricating a questionable disorder to sell unnecessary and potentially dangerous drugs.
"Achieving a happy and healthy sex life can be a real and important problem for some women. But we have lots of questions about the 'pink Viagra,'" the Washington Post quoted Amy Allina of the National Women's Health Network, a Washington-based advocacy group, as saying.
Viagra's catapult to blockbuster status after its 1998 approval set off a flurry of interest in me-too medications for women.
However, drugmaker Pfizer's hopes that its "little blue pill" would also ignite female libido fizzled, making it clear that a woman's sexuality is more complicated than a man's.
But, Germany's Boehringer Ingelheim is optimistic that flibanserin is on the verge of becoming the first prescription medication to tap what some have estimated could be a 2 billion dollar market in the United States alone.
"We believe women deserve options and we're hoping flibanserin may represent a safe and effective option for many women," said Michael Sand, who heads the company's clinical research on flibanserin.
Scientists found that flibanserin, developed as an antidepressant, was ineffective for treatment of depression.
But the drug appeared to produce an unexpected side effect: boosting women's libido.
This prompted the company to study it for hypoactive sexual desire disorder, or HSDD, an otherwise unexplained loss of sexual thoughts, fantasies and desire that can cause significant emotional distress.
Some research suggests 10 percent of women may suffer from HSDD.
"It's not that they are averse to sex. It's just that they don't care about it. They just stop thinking about it. It's like a switch has been flipped. It's a loss for them. They miss it. And they want it back," said Anita H. Clayton, a professor of psychiatry and neurobehavioral sciences at the University of Virginia who has studied the drug for the company. (ANI)

What are condoms, pills?

Mumbai, May 15, 2010 -- If you believe that today's youngsters are well-informed and don't need sex education, consider this: More than 40 per cent of unmarried women (age 15 to 24) in Maharashtra don't know about condoms and 72 per cent are clueless about emergency contraceptive pills, a survey has found. On an average, 30 per cent of unmarried Indian women don't know about condoms, the survey revealed.

While the lack of awareness may not have been a concern two decades ago, it spells trouble considering past studies have established that Indians are becoming sexually active at a younger age. The survey - the third District Level Household Survey (DLHS) - was commissioned by the Union Health Ministry to assess the current state of reproductive, maternal and child health across the country.

In Maharashtra, more than 37,600 households were surveyed between May and October 2008. A detailed report will be published soon.

Researchers found that while more than 75 per cent of women (married and unmarried) in the state knew about HIV/AIDS, nearly 73 per cent women had not even heard of other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Mumbai women were as ignorant - 70 per cent of them had not heard of STIs and barely 37 per cent knew that consistent use of condoms could protect one against HIV. Worse, 18.7 per cent of married women in the state had symptoms of the infections.

And, awareness levels were higher at the time of the second DLHS in 2002-4 when only 62.5 per cent women had not heard of STIs.

Freedom of choice causes depression

Researchers have carried out the study and found that while the ability to choose is generally a good thing too much freedom of choice is actually crippling people with indecision and making them unhappy.
According to the researchers, the problem is that when people have too much choice, they become obsessed about what your decision will say about you. And then when you have made the choice you worry that it is wrong. Choice can also foster selfishness and a lack of empathy because it can focus people on their own preferences and on themselves at the expense of what is good for society as a whole.

Lead author Prof Hazel Rose Markus of Stanford University says that we cannot assume that choice, as understood by educated, affluent Westerners, It is a universal aspiration, and that the provision of choice will necessarily foster freedom and well-being.

Even in contexts where choice can foster freedom, empowerment, and independence, it is not an unalloyed good. Choice can also produce a numbing uncertainty, depression, and selfishness.

In their study, the researchers looked at a body of research into the cultural ideas surrounding choice. They found that among non-Western cultures and among working class Westerners, freedom and choice are less important or mean something different than they do for educated people.

The enormous opportunity for growth and self- advancement that flows from unlimited freedom of choice may diminish rather than enhance subjective well-being. The findings are to be published in the upcoming issue of the 'Journal of Consumer Research'.

Eat organic foods whenever possible

There are quite a few reasons why you should consider eating organic foods whenever possible. There are too many types of toxins in most of the foods that are traditionally grown. Sure, they pass the inspections but even when you wash them a great amount of residue can be left behind. So you are eating fresh fruits and vegetables to be healthy overall but that can also release more harmful toxins into your body than you bargained for.
The environment in which we live also suffers due to these toxins. They end up in the water and in the air we breath. By refusing to buy products that contain them you will be sending a powerful message to those that grow them. They aren’t going to want to lose your money and business so they may start to consider the idea of growing organic foods. The more this is done the less damage our environment will have to suffer.
Organic foods don’t have any toxins at all which is why they are better for your body. You still get the same nutritional value but since you don’t have use lots of it to flush toxins from the body you will be much better off. Organic foods also don’t contain any types of additives or preservatives.

Research is the Key To Understanding Hair Loss

The most common type is androgenetic alopecia. This is due to genetics and the presence of male hormones. The genetics play an important role along with other factors. But, it is important to know that genetics is not the only reason for hair loss. One reason is just plain and simple aging. Are you already predestined to lose your hair? Your parents and grandparents on your father's or mother's side who have lost their hair is another thing to consider. In considering this possibility, if one of these family members is bald and the male children begin to lose their hair at an early age, it is safe to say they are probably going to be bald as well. On the other hand, this may not happen at all. There are other possibilities as well.
Hormones play a major role in the loss of hair. The androgenic hormones are produced by women and men. The adrenal glands play a big part in both sexes producing the androgens. Some studies suggest excessive amounts of androgens cause hair loss.During times of hormonal imbalance such as pregnancy or menopause, women can produce excessive DHT. When DHT enters the blood it can cause problems with the hair follicles. This can lead to baldness which is why DHT needs to be blocked. Left to its own devices it can totally ruin the follicles. When looking for the right product to block DHT, you must find something that will keep it from attacking the hair follicles.
